Recently, I was able to visit Paris, France with my grandma and it was truly a life changing experience. I'm sure you could guess that, along with immense reward and experience, traveling brings about a LOT of challenges. Any foreign traveler's main obstacle is always going to be figuring out what to say and how to say it.

If you ever find yourself in a French speaking country, or even if you just run into a native speaker, here are some questions, answers, and phrases that will help initiate effective communication! (I'm no native speaker myself, but I do know a bit, and such phrases helped me very much :)

French / English

Q - Combien ça coûte? / How much does that cost?

A - un, cinq, dix, vignt, cinquante, cent dollars/ One, five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred dollars

Q - Comment allez vous/tu? / How are you? (tu= informal, friends or children) (vous=formal, strangers and/or elders)

A - Bien, pas mal, comme si comme ça / Well, not well, alright

Q - Où est la toilette? / Where is the restroom?

A - en haut, en bas, à doit, à gauche / Upstairs, downstairs, right, left

Q- Quelle couleur? / Which color?

A- Rouge, orange, jaune, vert(e), bleu, violet, noir(e), blanc(he), brun(e) / Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white, brown

Phrases:

Je voulais un café au lait, s'il vous plaît/I would like a coffee with milk, please (black coffee= café noir)

Oui, bien sûr/ Yes, of course

Translation: What type of alcohol do you prefer? hehe, dogs aren't supposed to drink alcohol.

Du l'alcool/ Some alcohol (I'm 18, it was legal for me to drink in Paris!)

Beaucoup de Nutella/ A lot of Nutella

à quelle heure?/ At what time?

Taille/ Size

Les œufs/ Eggs

Viande/ Meat (for all of you meat eaters out there!)

Le Poulet/ Chicken

Le Jambon/ Ham

Le Poisson / Fish

Le Pain / Bread

Of course I can't list everything, but these are the first phrases, questions and words that come to my head when I think of my trip to Paris- but I encourage you to learn even more! There is certainly much more to learn from this beautiful language.
