Natural Haven in The Middle of Austin?

I'm all about finding awesome and inexpensive places to which I can venture off. Today, my friend Michael and I were expecting to check out Austin Nature & Science Center- but instead, we fell down a rabbit hole.

Of course, it was more of a trail than a hole and I didn't see a single rabbit... anyways.
We ended up on what I believe to have been one of the Zilker Botanical Gardens' nature preservation trails.
No regrets.
The trail head lead us down a stone stairway and through a beautiful little creek full of frogs, liken lined stone caves, and cool plants and bugs!
Fun Fact: We don't have many of them back home, but in Texas, there are a lot of beetles- and they're HUGE! I would have taken pictures, but the only accessible one raised his rear at me when I pulled out the camera. I took the hint.
The adventure didn't last for very long, but I was so grateful to have found this natural haven in the middle of the city! If you ever find yourself wanting a little bit of fresh air when in Austin, check out Zilker Botanical Gardens. I didn't even get to see the actual gardens, but I certainly will soon.

Oh yeah! On the way out, we passed this interesting piece inspired by World War II listening devices. The plaque describes this sculpture as being a "telescope for your ears", which is an accurate description! When I put the tubes to my ears, I could distinctly hear traffic that was several blocks away and Michael talking to me from ten or so feet- as if he were right next to me!
